"We aren't doing anything well", is the type of statement that gets
head coaches fired. It's clearly a statement of frustration & it is
also an indication of a lack of direction. We are not in it together, as
head coaches are fired all by their lonesome. It also indicates a failure
of getting an unquestioned message across ... regardless of whether you suck at
it or not. You will execute ... you will completely understand these
commands ... you will impart your will upon the moment ... these instructions
are implicit.
What should of been said is, "I really don't care a lick if any one of you
are capable of doing anything well. You will not waist my time. You
will not waist my opportunities. You will have no choice but to fail in
the attempt until you learn not to fail.
After all, it's not how you start the season that counts ... it's how you finish
it. In 2016 this franchise was 5-0, then lost 8 of the next 11 games
missing the playoffs. The only definitive thing a 0-2 start means is that
either your not properly prepared or your just not properly seasoned.
Believe me ... we will now tackle the latter. This franchise ... young as
it is ... is no longer sporting rookies ... but is still on that learning curve
combined with zero patience for accepting anything other than exceptional,
albeit acceptable, performance levels. Waiting another 12 years, to get it
together, is just not an option. We will win now. We will win
today. We will win tomorrow or we will be bloodied & battered in the
process. It time to understand who & what you are dealing with
...
What was Herb Brooks message. We are going to take their game (Russian
Hockey) & we are going to cram their game down their throats.
Assumption 1: Since you cannot execute on offense. Since you cannot
sell the fact that you were fouled on the play. Since you cannot
concentrate by moving your feet ... maintaining your leverage ... thereby seeing
your execution pre-snap. You won't be allowed to waist my time. You want
to waist your opportunities ... now you'll have to deal with a whole new set of
constraints. After all, its not the start of the game that you are trying
to win ... It's the end game that must be won. Instead, at any particular
moment I'm going to call one of eight plays, by rotating Cook & Mattison
into the lineup for the purpose of pounding the defense & running the
clock. Since you cannot pass block to protect Kirk Cousins, we are instead
going to apply leverage early & often upon the opposing defense by working
on our substandard run blocking until is becomes proficient. I don't care
if the result is 3 consecutive no gain plays, or even a loss, but if that
happens you just better expect to be resting on the other side of the
field. Don't expect any let up as apparently there is no other way to
practice run blocking unless we do it in the game. If you want to throw
the ball down field, you better stack first downs. Don't test
me.
This is no longer about trust. This isn't about decentralized decision
making. This isn't about personalities, nor is it about politics.
It's about winning at this game & performing. You can't execute the
simplest task, then we are going to get rudimentary. On every attempt I'm
going to take something out of that defense that they put in front of us.
We are going to extract a "pound of flesh". We are going to
impose "my will" until you can prove to me that you've earned the
opportunity of executing other brash & foolish attempts upon my
field.
This is who we are. This is who we want to be. This is what we will
be. You either pound a positive result or you will continue to suffer the
consequences. What is clear is that you will no longer waist my time &
you will no longer squander opportunities. In other words, I'm prepared to
forgo you squandering opportunities to gain that pound of flesh. Now catch
the friggin' ball!!!! At this juncture, you've clearly squandered all your
degrees of freedom. It doesn't matter who we play.
