Quarterback Reserve  August 15, 2022
The argument that Sean Mannion can help Kurt Cousins in any way whatsoever is a absolute load of crap.  On that field, Kurt Cousins stands alone ... either he sees it in real time ... under duress ... or he doesn't.  Paying anyone millions in a reserve roll, to be an extra set of eyes for Kirk Cousins after he screws the pooch is just a ridiculous idea that has a moldy fir growing on it.  Either Sean Mannion is the shit (walking intimidation on wheels) or he isn't & if he were the former, we would have seen it by now.

For Mike Zimmer, what he understood was that if his offense didn't make mistakes, he could win the game, but of course his defense minus key personnel just didn't hold up.  In other words, Sean Mannion was a safer choice when faced with winning games now but unfortunately his backup quarterback was nothing more than a faulty bunch of hope.  We are not foolishly playing that game anymore.

Kellon Mond on the other hand is the embodiment of potential where to develop him this organization must allow him to make mistakes.  How often do we forget Peyton Manning's first year in this league.  Since he's not going to displace Kirk Cousins in the immediate future it becomes paramount to steal as many resources for Mond as we can.  That translates to immersing his feet directly into the fire.

A wise investor would understand where to place his resources to maximum effect.  Putting any eggs in Sean Mannion's basket is the epitome of stupid.  Going forward, Kirk Cousins should be taking every practice snap with the #1 offense.  In these final 2 pre-season games, Mond should be behind center for every snap to protect Cousins for the season.  After his first series on opening day, versus the Packers, the veteran Kirk Cousins will take about a nanosecond to relearn to nuances of once again "riding his bike", without having set one foot playing any practice game.

On the other hand, for Mond those reps with the #1 offensive starts will prove to be invaluable in these two upcoming practice games.  Reserve quarterbacks always are thrust into directing the #1 offense without much continuity with those individuals.  This might help to explain why 2nd & 3rd string players having worked extensively with the reserve quarterback ... even having lesser skills ... tend to execute better with the reserve quarterback.  Work with the starting rotation of players ... under fire ... should always be seen as an invaluable asset.

Mannion will be around for the duration of our pre-season, where his practice work & arm can be used to keep his skills sharpened for his upcoming transition.

It is time to piss or get off the pot.  Taking any rep away from Mond to either placate Sean Mannion career, or placate Kirk Cousins in any way, is just a monumental mistake.  Why?  Because Mannion has a trade value of zero whereas Mond's potential is another matter.  It's time to wake up to that face.

If you want Kirk Cousins to achieve beyond his former placated standard, you'll need to develop Mond with all of your available resources.  It has always been a good thing to have to look over your shoulder as you might recall a Bledsoe-Brady injury game.  To achieve your highest standards you must be pushed to the pinnacle.
