Additional Minnesota Viking Commentary

Pass Defensed  December 13, 2021
In today's game, DB's & safeties have a mindset in regard to interceptions.  INT's are very much like sacks in that you are accessed by the media in how many that you've recorded to help qualify for either "All Pro" status or in regard to making the Pro-Bowl.  Paul Krause holds the NFL record for interceptions however his legacy, for the most part, was under Bud Grant, where he clearly had a different mindset.  By comparison, under Bud Grant, the "Personal Interception Statistic" meant very little compared to cataloging victories ... and yes ... there is a difference.

If you're a DB or safety, there is one fact that is for certain ... if you could catch like an NFL wide receiver ... then you'd be one.  Since it was my calling to be a DB ... then my only solace came from initiating contact ... laying lead pipe forearms to ones chin for example.  That, in itself, would need to be my small claim to glory as I wouldn't be catching TD passes ... unless it was a pick 6.

In a jump ball drill,  as a DB, you'd be bunched up with other DB's & receivers, where you fought for that ball.  In observing Bud Grants regime, his DB's were instilled with only one mindset.  It was to either deflect it (to a DB or safety) or knock it down, to the turf ... to secure the DB statistic ... "Pass Defensed".   In other words, if interceptions were such a great thing then why did it take Paul Krause so long to get into the NFL's Hall of Fame.  Said another way, what good are two (2) interceptions if you're responsible for also giving up 26 touchdowns during the year, as the later is inexcusable ... "TOAST".  Now, compare that to having only 52 balls sent into your area over the entire season due to your innate skills as a defender.  Now, for a moment, try to recall what it was like trying to run the ball anywhere near Antoine Winfield's patch of real estate.  Said directly ... interceptions mean very little by comparison ... and Bud Grant both clearly understood these concepts & instructed his secondary accordingly.  In other words, INT's should come from within team work ... not individual retarded behavior.

Today, both commentators & coaches continuously refer to 50/50 balls within our pass happy league which is how they want to access wide receivers ... & by default ... how they want to access DB's.  If you're a "DB Sucker", this is nothing more than the jump ball drill, where your goaded into falling into this DB trap.  The propaganda is forcing your thoughts into trying to intercept the ball, where instead you may have clear leverage on the receiver to deflect, knock-down, bat or punch that ball helplessly down to the ground.  Versus the Steelers, there were three highly contested catches, where a change over these brainwashed knuckleheads may have made the difference in each of those contested catches.  The simple rule of thumb is that if its a contested catch ... your focus should never be on catching the ball as the odds will never be in your favor.  Instead, as a DB in that situation, your only thought should have been "Pass Defensed", where your focus should be to hook that ball (with your hand & wrist), slam it, punch it or bat it into the ground.  A Pass Defense shifts the advantage from a "Receivers Contested Ball" to a DB's "Pass Defensed" ... "Catch" versus "No Catch".  Believe it or not ... officials that are worth their salt actually have a high regard for "Passes that are Defensed" as it indicates how well you were coached {Old School - as they are Old Goats}.  Of course this does not apply to favoritism which isn't your problem ... it is theirs.  Keep in mind that leverage always indicates that it is always easier to align for "Pass Defensed" than it is to align to catch the ball ...  as after all the ball wasn't thrown for you to catch it in the first place.  Of course, Defensive Pass Interference is going to change the outcome however DB's have the right to make a play on every ball & any rule, or thought (concept), that states that you must "Contest a Receivers Ball" is just outright wrong.  You might think this is crazy, but from Bud Grants perspective, it was always easier to accept Pass Interference on a ball that was "PASS DEFENSED" than it was to allow a Contested Catch.

To be direct, over all these many years, we all really miss the way Bud Grant influenced secondary play, as way too often, I've seen our secondary burned.  Afterwards, the thought would be ... I'd never make a play on the ball the way that DB just did.

To put this all into perspective, on that final play versus Pittsburgh, Harrison Smith, combined with others (team work) to made a play on the ball.  Harrison hooked the ball & it fell to the turf "OLD SCHOOL".  The result ... Vikings victory.

"Whatever a Viking is?"  It is a man lashed to that ship over "death inducing" frigid seas ... as there is nowhere else to go (hunger, fatigue, nausea, darkness, heavy winds, torrents, driving rain, rolling seas, rouge waves, crack-thunder, high-voltage-sizzler-bolts, combined with frozen northern gales) ... get the idea!  When you can imagine standing on that ship ... do you think any racial, political, or religious "anything" matters.  One cannot separate himself from these elements ... which is why you are seen as a true warrior.  Could a Raider be someone on Wall Street that takes peoples wealth?  This difference being that a Buccaneer is searching for booty upon those warm Caribbean Seas where a Viking is looking to just survive the day ... True Warriors.

In the six (6) succession touchdowns that were scored in the prior two games versus Detroit & Pittsburgh, there were two common elements.  On defense, all that scoring surrounded #21 Breeland ... as the chains weakest link.  It is now without doubt that our Head Coach Mike Zimmer does not believe in himself & his ability to train his athletes because Kris Boyd & Harrison Hand should both command playing time in front of Breeland.  In fact, Breeland didn't even bother to pick up his game until he was replaced by Danztler, earlier in the season.  When Boyd made that play, followed by his knucklehead taunting drawing a 15 yarder, I was in heaven.  Finally, a player playing with heart showing his emotions on the field.  For any other team ... you know ... the teams that count in this league ... they never would have thrown that flag, as there has been much worse against us throughout the year.  This franchises response was to pull Boyd off the field for a bit however I wanted to give him a medal.  If your an old salt like me, you'd clearly be able to differentiate from Bud Grant's perspective as he wouldn't give a damn about Breeland & instead would field lesser players based upon their heart.  Hand & Boyd have it in spades and if you want to somehow get control over those DB's you'll need to consider the play that could be inspired by their heart rather than be blinded by practice play ... when the shit doesn't count.

The second element, in both games, was in the blatant disregard of the "TIME ELEMENT".  On each of those six (6) TD drives you disregarded the fact that you were playing the clock, especially with a substantial lead.  In all six (6) of our offensive drives, we did not secure that first 1st down because we lacked both the understanding & the fortitude to demand that basic result.  Instead, we carried on ... on our merry way ... allowing the full latitude of play calling ... instead of driving home a message.  Now I can't state this clearly enough, so listen hard.  There is a vast difference between #51 Wyatt Davis & #64 Blake Brandel on that end of your line as your power tight end.  Don't believe me???  Put Wyatt Davis in motion ... now do it with Brandel.  Now try trap blocking or a zone stretch considering Davis's althetic skill.  Now you understood what the Raven's did to your flanks & now you've had a little success with Brandel in our last contest.  It is now time to develop Davis for that playoff run ... God willing!  Between our head coach Mike Zimmer & our play caller Klint Kubiak, there must be a signal between them ... indicating to Kirk Cousins that the ball is being taken out of your hands until we claw-out that first-1st-down on this series.  "Come on guys ... I want to get back into this game.  Maybe I have another "62-yarder" in me ... that needs doing".  Everything changes for Kirk on that second series after that first 1st down.  It's ok if absolutely everyone knows that its coming ... because they will be powerless to stop it.

What's the difference between running the ball to achieve a 2nd & 8 followed by two incompletions & a punt & running the damn ball three successive times?  The answer of course is the destruction of TIME combined with the very real possibility of 4th & short ... especially with Wyatt Davis smashing those flanks.  Your defense didn't lose that game ... you mindset ... combined with the impetuous nature of Kirk Cousins futility did.  John Elway wins nothing without his run game (Terrell Davis).  Champions run it when others choose not.  The anatomy of the "Key Retarded Thought".  Was Dan Marino impetuous without a run game?  Yes!  Yes he was.
