NFL Seeding Format  January 23, 2022
Playoff Seeding should never reflect any aspect of either one game, or should it be based upon the smaller sample of any divisional record, as in the 17 game format, having nine conference games & eight non-conference games, the seeding should be based upon the overall aggregate of the season.  In other words, the edge between any particular game may be solely from how that game was scheduled in that season ... being home or away ... as with margins of victory being so tight, a one game measure can only provide a skewed scale on which too much is measured.

It is for this reason, that NFL playoff seeding should be based upon the following tie-breakers respectively:
1. Win-Loss Record
2. Conference win-loss record
3. Non-Conference win-loss record.
4. The win-loss record of common opponents.
5. By accumulating the in-season victories weighted by that losing team's "in-season" strength of victories.
6. Divisional Wins, to break ties within each division only.
7. Head to Head victory (one day should never define an entire season)
8. Coin Flip

The present playoff seeding format is quite convoluted by comparison to this proposed new seeding format that is streamlined & easily followed.  It is also virtually impossible to get to the possibility of any coin flip ... as it should be.

This new seeding format would ensure that the strongest teams would secure the highest playoff seeding where playoff seeding would no longer be dependent upon inbred divisional games, the results of a substandard schedule (by getting to face easier teams that were destroyed by divisional dynasties), the elimination of first round byes in the opening round of the playoffs, & a way for the best team to re-enter the fray in the fight for the Lombardi as the highest seeds earned that right.  It also substantially reduces the possibility of playoff teams facing their inbred divisional foes during the playoffs like having the Rams face the 49ers for the 3rd time this season.
