NFL Hatred Lottery
April 13, 2021
Maybe we were attacking this thing from the wrong
angle. Then my wife came to mind. She laid out all that coin to pay
for the local newspaper to have half of it chucked full of Penn State (or
regional football). To say the least, she's not a fan of Penn State
Football. Then it hit me ... for the NFL to progress ... it needs to
embrace all of its fun loving hatred ... and unleash it lottery style.
Consider for a moment that City of Brotherly Love. Of course, I'm
referring to Philadelphia, PA where you cannot approach that stadium without the
plea, "Can't we just all agree to hate the Cowboys". Contained
within that one statement was the key to turn every owners head throughout the
league.
As proposed, within the leagues new 17 game schedule featuring 9 conference
games & 8 non-conference games, are three proposed divisional
contests. The three divisional games having one at home, one away &
one at a neutral sight. At first, the thought was to have all 16 neutral
sight games being played at international locations & then it hit me.
What if those neutral games were to be played at a neutral sight based upon the
NFL's lottery system.
Now consider the fairly recent past which entangled the long suffering Browns,
Bills, Jets, etc., that have a sordid history within their fan base. If in
your division, you were a 4th place finisher for 10 years in a row, what respite
do they have. What if out of 32 teams, they drafted in the top five after
those 10 years. I know, isn't that draft pick enough ... well ... it's not
enough for the fan base ... especially after they pay those players to act like
an idiot ... to get their release ... so that they can play with Tom
Brady.
No, the team holing that #1 pick, should also win the NFL hatred lottery too.
Here's how it would work. Let's say that the Eagles held that #1 pick
distinction in the up coming 2021 draft. That Eagle franchise would also
hold that lottery ticket where their season ticket holders would hold the first
choice on that neutral site game. If their hatred of the Cowboys is what
they say it is ... maybe they select the Cowboys to come to Philadelphia to play
that contest. Now follow me on this one. These season ticket holders
seats aren't free & if the Cowboy fans travel well ... as they say ... maybe
they will pay heavily to attend that game to support Jerry Jones Low Life
Brigade. Now that's real compensation for that long lived suffering.
If those fans don't belly up to the bar, then maybe those season ticket holders
would take pride in demonstrating their displeasure thereby potentially
effecting the outcome of those contests.
Now, this is where this gets really interesting. These are long hated
division rival contests. The lottery allows that in-line lottery franchise
the opportunity to select any neutral site divisional contest that they wish
where they'll get to pick from 16 games per year. In other words, this
years epic contest could have been scheduled in Cleveland's stadium, where say
the Sea Hawk's would have to play the 49ers, not in rain, but in the frigid cold
off Lake Erie (dependent upon the schedule). Do you think this might have
appeal to any long suffering fan base? The result just might make up for a
decade of suffering. How about a real scrum match featuring vicious hated
rivals in Detroit on Thanksgiving. After all, it's about the fans ...
isn't it.
Again, at present the 6 game divisional approach (almost 40% of the season) is
not only outdated but is clearly incestuous. It's time to let the negative
go. Just let it go. Owners are looking for "The Hook" to
attract more appeal ... more interest ... in these NFL epic battles.
Concepts like these might even get my wife & her girl friends some water
cooler fodder that previously never existed. Change can be a good thing.
Yes, my friends ... hatred ... you know .... fun loving hatred ... has all
sorts of possibilities.
