Donatell Exposed  September 20,2022
Kevin O'Connell gets a big fat "F" for an offense that went 3 & out on its two first series.  Cook runs through openings, which are never there on opening drives.  It is time to open games with Alexander Mattison which is much more inclined to pound out 6 to 8 yards on that first hand off.  He doesn't run through openings like Cook ... he pounds & grinds his way forward.  Attack!  Attack!  Attack!  Our head coach should be ashamed of himself for not getting this offense off by immediately stacking together first downs.  Haven't you learned anything from the Zimmer Era.  Irv Smith to line up left, Johnny Mundt outside of Brandel in a power right set, aligning with our standard 5 lineman, C.J. Ham leading Mattison's handoff from Cousins into that hole.  Statement ... "We are going to establish the run immediately"..  Haven't you learned anything from our appointment with the Raven's last year.  Establishing the run is paramount.  Sure it will get the papers buzzing, but we all know the importance of Cook but it would be prudent to unleash him after the defense has been softened up a bit after a total bombardment.

Ed Donatell's defense was severely exposed by a simple dual threat quarterback.  I haven't seen a Viking #22 take such a beating since the 1973 season where Czonka bulldozed Paul Krause in Super Bowl VIII.  His umbrella concept is as old & as stale as dinosaur crap.  His two deep look is wasteful.  Camryn Bynum needs to be moved into a coverage safety look, leaving Harrison Smith deep, introducing a 3rd safety Lewis Cine into the mix.  His role, versus that quarterback running is to be more than a spy, but instead to be a roving destroyer intertwined with defensive lineman sets.  Mass destruction to equal Lewis Cine.  Delayed blitzes should be the order of the day. The defense has to change its mode to Attack!  Attack!  Attack! instead of all this passive horse shit.  You don't win championships that way & by the way ... Josh Allen is on the docket too, so you better get this thing up to speed.  4 rushers, 3 safeties, 1 linebacker, 3 corners.  High Risk ... High Reward.  Letting them just move it into the red zone & score is just stupid.  Immediately draw the line the moment the offense gains possession.

Yes, Kirk Cousins offense went 3 & out on his 1st two drives that you can attribute this to a lack of imagination.  Your stepping into one of the most hostile environments in the NFL (Just try walking in that Philadelphia parking lot after the game, donning your purple, & eyeball any one of those gangsters in a clutch, & your a dead man).  Half the town can't even attend games due to their history of fights.  Your not strolling down the boulevard in downtown Los Angeles ... Let me tell you.  You needed to establish a bullish Toughness ... instead we got fairy ball ... where in England they'd call you a bunch of wankers.   How hard is it to say that it wasn't Kirk Cousins fault when he's done this throughout his career.  I'm here to tell you that although he will be held responsible ... it was a complete failure across the board as every hand was dirty.

The lie was exposed.  We were told that the scheme would enable Justin Jefferson to get open early & often.  As he's running his route, in preparation for receiving the ball he needs to look back toward the quarterback.  All that DB needs to do is to walk right into the path of that route thereby causing all that havoc that we saw last night.  Since in the NFL, this is not called pass interference, nor is it illegal contact, the DB's are given a license to steal by being allowed to run into the progression of that developing route.  Since the WR is looking back toward the quarterback he's completely unaware of the obstacle which is exactly how they got Randy Moss all those years ago.  Unaware, he ran into the obstacle, and then turned up lame with a hamstring pull.  Cousin's blind acceptance of this concept resulted in at least two interceptions last night.

I understand that the DB is entitled to his position but how is it that his intentional movement into the path of an unaware WR is not illegal contact?  This tactic was used by Slay repeatedly last night.

Do you know why Kirk Cousins is not highly regarded by anyone?  It's because he's gullible & does not have the stones of an elite quarterback.  In his pre-read prior to that snap, if he saw their #1 DB Slay intending coverage all over Jefferson, Cousins should have immediately shifted his focus from Slay's area into exploiting that defenses weakness, which was just about anywhere else on that field.  Instead he blindly followed a fallacy.

It's 1st & goal from the 9 yard line we have Kirk Cousins in a shotgun formation. It's not like there's 80 yards in front of him.  In the red zone, championship teams need to be able to run the ball.  On first down, I'm running that heavy set formation of Ham, Brandel, Smith Jr., & Mundt with Alexander Mattison getting his nose up in there.  It's a damn sight better than an incompletion in a condensed zone.  Wake up people.

If you think that Donatell's defense was somehow better because the Eagles didn't score a point in the 2nd half you need to understand that they didn't need to.  They were up by 17 points knowing that there are 15 more season games in front of them.

Once again, our lack of 1st downs, shifted the burden all over the defense like a crap covered storm ... indicated by the time of possession.  What then results from those 3 & outs is the long term deterioration of your defensive personnel.  Said another way, "FIRST DOWNS SHOULD BE PARAMOUNT ... DUMB ASS!  It's not OK Mr. Kirk!
